Ragtime was the 2026 Tony-winning revival featuring Kai Harada’s award-winning sound design.
Harada won Best Sound Design of a Musical for Ragtime at the 79th Tony Awards. Sound design helps define how a musical reaches its audience, from the clarity of vocals and orchestra to effects, transitions, and the overall sonic atmosphere.
Ragtime was also honored as Best Revival of a Musical. Its other 2026 Tony winners were Joshua Henry for Leading Actor in a Musical and Caissie Levy for Leading Actress in a Musical, giving the production four competitive awards in total.
The wording distinguishes Ragtime from Death of a Salesman, which won Best Sound Design of a Play for Mikaal Sulaiman. The Tony Awards maintain separate sound-design categories for musicals and plays, so each winner was tied to a different form of production.
