Which 2026 Tony-winning play received its sole award for Best Play?

Liberation received its sole 2026 Tony Award for Best Play.

Written by Bess Wohl, Liberation centers on a group of women whose relationships and political commitments evolve across different periods. The play’s Tony victory recognized the production as the season’s outstanding new play.

Unlike productions that collect awards in acting, direction, or design, Liberation won only in the Best Play category. Its result illustrates how a production can receive the field’s top writing honor without also taking home prizes in the other competitive disciplines.

The award was presented at the 79th Tony Awards, which honored Broadway productions from the 2025–26 season. Best Play is separate from Best Revival of a Play, which went to Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman.
