Which 2018 Spider-Man film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature?

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The film was released in 2018 and received the Oscar at the 91st Academy Awards, held in 2019. It was the first Spider-Man film to win an Academy Award and the first feature-length Spider-Man movie to win the animated-feature category.

Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, the film follows Miles Morales as he becomes Spider-Man and encounters heroes from parallel dimensions. Its distinctive visual style blends computer animation with comic-book techniques, including halftone textures, drawn lines, varied frame rates, and on-screen graphic effects. The voice cast includes Shameik Moore as Miles and Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker.

The win is sometimes confused with the film’s other accolades or with the live-action Spider-Man movies, none of which won Best Animated Feature. Into the Spider-Verse defeated fellow 2018 nominees including Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Mirai, and Ralph Breaks the Internet. Its success led to the sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in 2023.
