Which 2016 film adaptation stars Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch in Assassin’s Creed?

The story behind the answer

Assassin’s Creed is the 2016 film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch.

Directed by Justin Kurzel, the film follows Callum Lynch after he is recruited by the Abstergo Foundation. Using a machine called the Animus, Callum relives the memories of his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha, an Assassin active during the Spanish Inquisition.

The film was released in December 2016 and was produced as a feature-length expansion of the game series’ conflict between Assassins and Templars. Fassbender also served as a producer, and the cast includes Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and Michael K. Williams.

The movie is not a direct retelling of one game’s campaign. Its modern protagonist and historical ancestor were created for the film, although the Animus, Abstergo, and Assassin–Templar conflict come from the games. Assassin’s Creed: Lineage is a separate 2009 short-film series.
