Which 2016 Beyoncé visual album explores themes of infidelity, family, and Black identity?

The story behind the answer

Lemonade is the 2016 Beyoncé visual album that explores infidelity, family, and Black identity.

Released on April 23, 2016, Lemonade combined a traditional audio album with a 65-minute film shown on HBO. Its songs and film were organized into chapters associated with emotional and spiritual stages, including intuition, denial, anger, apathy, accountability, reform, forgiveness, hope, and redemption.

The project drew widespread attention for its references to betrayal and marital tension, but its themes extended far beyond a relationship narrative. It also addressed Black womanhood, history, motherhood, Southern culture, and the experiences of Black Americans. The visual album incorporated poetry by Warsan Shire and imagery connected with New Orleans and African diasporic traditions.

Lemonade received strong critical acclaim and earned Beyoncé the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album. It was nominated for Album of the Year, while “Formation” became one of the project’s most recognized songs.
