Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album centered on themes of betrayal and healing is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, after its accompanying film premiered on HBO. The project combines songs, poetry, spoken narration, and visual chapters organized around emotional stages including intuition, denial, anger, apathy, emptiness, accountability, reform, forgiveness, hope, and redemption.
Its lyrics address personal and collective experiences, while its imagery draws on Black Southern culture, African diasporic traditions, family history, and the strength of Black women. The album’s themes prompted widespread discussion about marriage, infidelity, identity, and resilience.
Lemonade debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and became Beyoncé’s sixth consecutive number-one album there. People sometimes use “visual album” loosely for any album with videos, but Lemonade was conceived and released as a unified audio-visual work.
