Which 2014 biographical film about Alan Turing stars Benedict Cumberbatch?

The story behind the answer

The 2014 biographical film about Alan Turing starring Benedict Cumberbatch is The Imitation Game.

Directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Graham Moore, the film is based on Andrew Hodges's biography Alan Turing: The Enigma. Cumberbatch portrays Turing during World War II, when he worked with British codebreakers at Bletchley Park to decipher German messages produced by the Enigma machine. Keira Knightley plays Joan Clarke, one of his fellow cryptanalysts.

The title refers to "The Imitation Game," a thought experiment Turing proposed in his 1950 paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence." The paper explored whether a machine could imitate human conversation convincingly enough to be considered intelligent. Enigma is a tempting wrong answer because it is the name of the German encryption system and also appears in the title of Turing's biography, but it is not the film's title.

The movie was a major international success and received eight Academy Award nominations. It won Best Adapted Screenplay, although historians criticized several invented or rearranged events and aspects of its portrayal of Turing's wartime work.
