Answer
District 9
Answer
District 9
The 2009 Peter Jackson-produced film set in South Africa is District 9.
Directed and co-written by Neill Blomkamp, District 9 grew out of his 2005 short film Alive in Joburg. Peter Jackson became involved as a producer after their planned Halo adaptation stalled. The feature retained ideas from the short, including documentary-style interviews, handheld footage, alien technology, and a tense encounter between humans and extraterrestrial refugees.
The story begins in 1982, when a huge alien spacecraft appears over Johannesburg. The aliens, nicknamed “prawns,” are confined to an impoverished settlement called District 9. The film follows Wikus van de Merwe, a government official whose exposure to alien biotechnology transforms him and forces him to confront the brutality of the relocation program.
District 9 uses science fiction to explore apartheid, racial segregation, xenophobia, forced removals, and corporate exploitation. Its title and premise were particularly influenced by Cape Town’s District Six, a real community dismantled under apartheid-era forced-removal policies. The film was shot in South Africa and became Blomkamp’s feature-directing debut.
