Which 2004 biographical film about Paul Rusesabagina stars Don Cheadle?

The story behind the answer

The 2004 biographical film about Paul Rusesabagina starring Don Cheadle is Hotel Rwanda.

Directed and co-written by Terry George, Hotel Rwanda dramatizes Rusesabagina’s efforts during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. He was the manager of the Hôtel des Mille Collines in Kigali, where he used negotiation, personal connections and access to supplies to protect refugees from attacking militias. Don Cheadle plays Rusesabagina, with Sophie Okonedo portraying his wife, Tatiana.

The film depicts the hotel sheltering more than 1,200 people, although the historical account and the movie’s interpretation have been debated. Hotel Rwanda helped introduce many international viewers to the genocide against the Tutsi and to the failure of the international community to intervene effectively.

It was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Cheadle and Best Supporting Actress for Okonedo. A frequent mix-up is The Last King of Scotland, another historical drama set in Uganda that features a fictionalized African political story, but it is not about Rusesabagina.
