Which 1999 film features a hacker named Neo who learns he is 'The One'?

The story behind the answer

The 1999 film featuring hacker Neo, who learns he is “The One,” is The Matrix.

Written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, The Matrix follows Thomas Anderson, a computer programmer and clandestine hacker who uses the alias Neo. Morpheus introduces him to the truth: the world he knows is a simulated reality created by machines, while humanity’s bodies are kept in energy-producing pods.

Neo’s identity as “The One” develops from prophecy, choice, and his growing ability to manipulate the Matrix’s code. The name “Neo” is also an anagram of “One,” a deliberate clue. After Agent Smith kills him inside the simulation, Trinity’s declaration of love and the Oracle’s prophecy help trigger his transformation.

The Matrix is often confused with similar late-1990s science-fiction films such as Dark City and The Thirteenth Floor, but neither centers on Neo or the Matrix simulation. The film was released in 1999 and launched a franchise starring Keanu Reeves.
