Which 1995 biographical film about the Apollo 13 mission stars Tom Hanks?

The story behind the answer

The 1995 biographical film about the Apollo 13 mission starring Tom Hanks is Apollo 13.

Directed by Ron Howard, the film dramatizes NASA’s 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission, which was aborted after an oxygen-tank explosion crippled the spacecraft. Tom Hanks plays astronaut Jim Lovell, with Kevin Bacon as Jack Swigert and Bill Paxton as Fred Haise.

The screenplay was adapted from Lost Moon, the memoir by Lovell and journalist Jeffrey Kluger. Although the film takes dramatic liberties, it closely follows the crew’s struggle to conserve power, repair life-support systems and navigate safely back to Earth. The famous line “Houston, we have a problem” was also slightly altered from the mission’s actual wording.

Apollo 13 is sometimes confused with First Man, which focuses on Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11, or The Right Stuff, which covers the earlier Mercury Seven program. The film received nine Academy Award nominations and won for film editing and sound.
