Which 1993 biographical film about Tina Turner stars Angela Bassett?

The story behind the answer

The 1993 biographical film about Tina Turner starring Angela Bassett is What's Love Got to Do with It.

Directed by Brian Gibson, the film is based on Tina Turner's 1986 autobiography, I, Tina. Bassett plays Tina, born Anna Mae Bullock, while Laurence Fishburne portrays musician Ike Turner. The story follows Tina's rise from a childhood in Tennessee to her partnership with Ike, their turbulent marriage, and her eventual solo comeback.

The film is named after Turner's 1984 hit song "What's Love Got to Do with It," which helped establish her as a major solo star. A common mix-up is The Bodyguard, another famous music-related film from the 1990s, but that movie stars Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner and is not a Tina Turner biopic.

Although widely praised, the film takes dramatic liberties with Turner's life. Tina Turner later said that some events and details were changed, even while praising Bassett's performance. Bassett received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, and Fishburne was nominated for Best Actor.
