Disney's 1991 Beauty and the Beast was the first animated film to win the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
The award was presented at the 49th Golden Globe Awards in 1992. Beauty and the Beast competed against live-action films including Bugsy, The Fisher King, Hook and Grand Canyon, making its victory a notable breakthrough for animated cinema.
The film had already attracted major attention for combining traditional hand-drawn animation with a serious romantic story and Broadway-influenced musical numbers. Its success helped change the way major awards bodies viewed animated features.
This achievement is sometimes confused with the Academy Awards. Beauty and the Beast became the first animated feature nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture, but it did not win that category. It won two Oscars instead, including Best Original Song.
