The 1991 biographical film about Jim Garrison starring Kevin Costner is JFK. Directed and co-written by Oliver Stone, the political thriller dramatizes Garrison's investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Garrison was the district attorney of Orleans Parish, Louisiana. In the late 1960s, he investigated connections surrounding New Orleans businessman Clay Shaw and argued that Kennedy's assassination involved a conspiracy rather than Lee Harvey Oswald acting alone. The film is based chiefly on Garrison's memoir On the Trail of the Assassins and Jim Marrs's book Crossfire.
JFK is not a neutral documentary biography: it combines documented events with speculation, reconstructed scenes, and fictionalized or composite elements. Its conspiracy claims generated major controversy when it was released. Costner plays Garrison, while the cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Gary Oldman, Joe Pesci, and Donald Sutherland. The film won Oscars for cinematography and film editing.
