Which 1989 Pixar short features a snowman in a snow globe?

The story behind the answer

The 1989 Pixar short featuring a snowman in a snow globe is “Knick Knack.”

Written and directed by John Lasseter, the short follows a lonely snowman souvenir trapped inside a globe labeled “Nome Sweet Nome, Alaska.” He watches other vacation-themed knick-knacks on a shelf and tries increasingly extreme methods to escape, including a hammer, jackhammer, blowtorch, and explosives.

“Knick Knack” is often remembered simply as the snow-globe short, but its central joke is the contrast between the snowman’s wintry prison and the sunny souvenirs surrounding him. The film is nearly dialogue-free, using visual gags, geometric computer animation, and exaggerated cartoon violence. Its inspirations included “Tom and Jerry,” Looney Tunes, Chuck Jones, and Tex Avery.

The short debuted at the 1989 SIGGRAPH convention and was Pixar’s fourth short. Bobby McFerrin improvised its distinctive a cappella soundtrack while watching a rough cut. A revised version was later shown with “Finding Nemo” in 2003, making the short familiar to a new theatrical audience.
