Which 1985 Nintendo game became the best-selling video game of its time?

The story behind the answer

Super Mario Bros. was the 1985 Nintendo game that became the best-selling video game of its time.

Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, the game stars Mario as he travels through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser. Its side-scrolling levels combine running, jumping, power-ups, hidden areas, and increasingly demanding enemy patterns.

Nintendo released Super Mario Bros. for the Family Computer in Japan in 1985 and for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in 1985. The game became closely associated with the NES’s recovery of the North American console market after the early-1980s crash.

The original release is sometimes confused with later Mario games such as Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World. Its famous power-ups include the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman.
