Which 1981 arcade game introduced Mario, then called Jumpman, to players?
Answer
Donkey Kong
Answer
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong is the 1981 arcade game that introduced Mario, then called Jumpman, to players.
Nintendo released Donkey Kong in arcades in July 1981. The player controlled a jumping carpenter who climbed platforms and ladders, avoided rolling barrels, and attempted to rescue a captured woman from a giant ape. The game was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, with development overseen by Nintendo engineer Gunpei Yokoi.
Nintendo's early English-language materials called the hero Jumpman. The character was later renamed Mario, reportedly after Nintendo of America's landlord Mario Segale. Donkey Kong also established the names and roles of Donkey Kong and Pauline, although their later identities and relationships changed across the franchise.
The game is sometimes confused with Mario Bros., released in 1983. Mario Bros. introduced Luigi and shifted the action to a pipe-filled arena, but Mario's first appearance came two years earlier in Donkey Kong.
