Mac Tonight was the talking moon character who appeared in McDonaldland advertising in the 1980s.
McDonald's introduced Mac Tonight in 1986 as a character for a campaign promoting evening dining. The character was depicted as a crescent or moon-shaped figure wearing sunglasses, a tuxedo, and a bow tie. His visual design and performance gave McDonald's nighttime advertising a distinct identity.
Mac Tonight's commercials used a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife,” a song associated with Bobby Darin's 1959 recording. The campaign therefore connected a recognizable musical style with a new McDonald's character and a message about eating at the restaurant after dark.
Mac Tonight is often mixed up with the older McDonaldland characters, such as the Hamburglar and Mayor McCheese. Those characters belonged to the broader fantasy setting, while Mac Tonight was primarily a separate 1980s advertising figure centered on dinner and evening visits.
