Mac Tonight was the McDonald’s advertising character who wore sunglasses and sang about nighttime dining.
Introduced in 1986, Mac Tonight was a singing crescent-moon-headed character used to promote McDonald’s evening business. His commercials featured a lounge-style performance of “Mack the Knife,” adapted with lyrics encouraging customers to visit McDonald’s at night.
The character’s visual design combined a black tuxedo, dark sunglasses, and a crescent moon head. That combination made Mac Tonight distinct from Ronald McDonald and the younger-oriented McDonaldland characters. The campaign was especially associated with encouraging customers to think of McDonald’s as an evening destination.
Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with later McDonald’s promotional figures because he was not a permanent mascot in the way Ronald McDonald became. His campaign also generated legal controversy over the use of “Mack the Knife,” but the character remains a notable example of McDonald’s brand experimentation during the 1980s.
