Which 1978 animated film based on J.R.R. Tolkien's work was directed by Ralph Bakshi?

The story behind the answer

Ralph Bakshi directed the 1978 animated film The Lord of the Rings, based on the first half of Tolkien's epic and the beginning of its second half.

The film adapts The Fellowship of the Ring and much of The Two Towers. It uses traditional animation together with rotoscoping, a technique in which artists trace over filmed live-action movement. The production was released by United Artists in November 1978.

Bakshi's film ends before Tolkien's complete story is concluded, which sometimes causes confusion with Rankin/Bass's 1980 animated The Return of the King. The two productions are different films. Bakshi's version remains historically important as the first feature-length theatrical adaptation of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.
