Which 1974 charity house became the first Ronald McDonald House?

The story behind the answer

The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House became the first Ronald McDonald House in 1974.

The house was created to provide accommodation and support for families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. Its founding was connected to Philadelphia Eagles player Fred Hill, whose daughter was being treated for leukemia, and to doctors and supporters who helped organize the project.

McDonald’s restaurants, franchisees, suppliers, and customers supported the effort through fundraising and donations. The familiar Ronald McDonald name linked the charity to the company’s best-known character while giving the brand a major community-focused identity.

Ronald McDonald House Charities later expanded internationally. A Ronald McDonald House is not the same thing as a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile or a hospital family room; those are separate programs within the wider charitable network.
