Which 1971 David Bowie album includes the song 'Life on Mars?'?

The story behind the answer

David Bowie’s 1971 album Hunky Dory includes the song “Life on Mars?”. The track appears as the fourth song on side one, between “Eight Line Poem” and “Kooks.”

Hunky Dory was Bowie’s fourth studio album and was released in the United Kingdom through RCA Records on 17 December 1971. Recorded at Trident Studios in London, it marked a major creative turning point: Bowie wrote much of the material on piano, while Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey helped establish the sound that would soon define the Spiders from Mars.

“Life on Mars?” is a dramatic, cinematic ballad featuring Rick Wakeman on piano and a string arrangement by Mick Ronson. Bowie conceived it partly as a response to the popularity of “My Way,” and its surreal lyrics follow a girl seeking escape through the cinema rather than describing life on Mars literally.

The album initially sold modestly, but its reputation and chart performance grew after the success of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. RCA later issued “Life on Mars?” as a single in 1973, when it reached number three in the UK.
