Which 1968 film inspired Ford's Bullitt edition Mustang GT?

The story behind the answer

Which 1968 film inspired Ford’s Bullitt edition Mustang GT? The film was Bullitt. Released in 1968 and directed by Peter Yates, it starred Steve McQueen as San Francisco police detective Frank Bullitt and became famous for its extended car chase.

McQueen drove a modified Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT fastback with a 390-cubic-inch V8 and four-speed manual transmission. Warner Bros. purchased two Mustangs for filming, and both were modified for the demanding chase scenes by technician Max Balchowsky. The cars pursued black Dodge Chargers through San Francisco.

Ford first created a Bullitt edition Mustang GT in 2001, then released another version for 2008 to mark the film’s 40th anniversary. A third version returned for the 2019 and 2020 model years, commemorating the film’s 50th anniversary and echoing its subdued appearance with dark green or black paint, reduced badging, and a manual transmission.

The movie title is therefore the answer—not a racing film such as Le Mans or Grand Prix.
