Which 1956 novel by C.S. Lewis is narrated by Orual?

The story behind the answer

Till We Have Faces is the 1956 C.S. Lewis novel narrated by Orual.

The novel retells the myth of Cupid and Psyche from the viewpoint of Psyche’s older sister, Orual. Presented as a princess and later queen of the kingdom of Glome, Orual struggles with jealousy, grief, love, and the gods’ apparent silence. Her first-person account gives the classical story a psychologically complex narrator.

Lewis described the book as a retelling of the Cupid and Psyche myth, but he made major changes to its setting, voice, and emphasis. The title refers to the idea that genuine self-knowledge requires people to stop hiding behind masks and evasions.

Published in 1956, the novel was Lewis’s last work of fiction. It is less overtly connected to Narnia than many readers expect, and it does not belong to the Chronicles of Narnia. The name Orual is therefore a useful identifier for this separate mythic and philosophical novel.
