Which 1945 C.S. Lewis novel is set partly on the planet Perelandra?

The story behind the answer

The 1945 C.S. Lewis novel set on the planet Perelandra is Perelandra. It is the second book in Lewis’s Space Trilogy and continues the story of philologist Elwin Ransom.

Ransom travels to Perelandra, identified with Venus, where he encounters a newly created world and a moral conflict involving temptation. The novel develops Lewis’s interest in theology, planetary mythology, language, and the consequences of obedience or rebellion.

Perelandra follows Out of the Silent Planet, published in 1938, and precedes That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. Although the books share characters and a broad fictional universe, each has a different setting and narrative structure.

The title can cause confusion because it names both the novel and its fictional planet. Lewis’s other planetary names include Malacandra for Mars and Thulcandra for Earth. Those terms belong to the same trilogy’s invented cosmology.
