Which 1943 C.S. Lewis novel features the space traveler Elwin Ransom and the planet Perelandra?

The story behind the answer

Perelandra is the 1943 C.S. Lewis novel featuring Elwin Ransom and the planet Perelandra.

The novel is the second book in Lewis’s Space Trilogy, following Out of the Silent Planet. Ransom travels to the planet Perelandra, also called Venus, where he encounters a newly created world and a pair of human inhabitants. The plot develops as a cosmic and theological struggle over temptation and obedience.

Lewis published the novel in 1943 under his own name. That year places it during the Second World War, when he was also delivering the BBC talks later associated with Mere Christianity. Readers sometimes confuse Perelandra with Malacandra, the Martian setting of Out of the Silent Planet; both planets belong to the same trilogy.
