Which 1943 C.S. Lewis novel features the planet Malacandra?
Answer
Out of the Silent Planet
Answer
Out of the Silent Planet
C.S. Lewis’s 1943 novel Out of the Silent Planet features the planet Malacandra.
Out of the Silent Planet is the first book in Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Its protagonist, Elwin Ransom, is kidnapped and taken to Malacandra, a planet that Earth’s inhabitants call Mars. The story presents several intelligent species and examines language, morality, colonial ambition, and humanity’s distorted view of other worlds.
Lewis published the novel in 1938, not 1943. The 1943 date belongs to Perelandra, the second book in the trilogy. This date distinction is important because summaries sometimes list the trilogy by its later publication milestones.
The trilogy’s final volume is That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. Together, the books are also known as the Ransom Trilogy. Lewis’s science fiction was shaped partly by his conversations with fellow writer J.R.R. Tolkien, although the series has a very different setting and tone from Middle-earth.
