Which 1943 book by C.S. Lewis examines moral education and objective values?
Answer
The Abolition of Man
Answer
The Abolition of Man
The Abolition of Man is C.S. Lewis’s 1943 book examining moral education and objective values.
The work developed from three lectures delivered at the University of Durham in 1943. Lewis criticized an approach to education that, in his view, treated value judgments as merely subjective emotional reactions. He argued instead for a universal moral order, which he called the Tao.
The book is not a novel and is not primarily a biography of humanity’s extinction. Its title refers to the possible loss of distinctly human reason and moral judgment if education and technology reject objective values. It remains one of Lewis’s most discussed works of moral philosophy.
