Which 1938 C.S. Lewis novel begins his science-fiction trilogy about Dr. Elwin Ransom?

The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet begins C.S. Lewis’s science-fiction trilogy about Dr. Elwin Ransom.

Out of the Silent Planet was published in 1938 and introduces Elwin Ransom, a Cambridge philologist who is abducted and taken to Malacandra, the name used for Mars. The book combines planetary adventure with philosophical and theological ideas, including questions about language, civilization, evil, and humanity’s place in the universe.

It is followed by Perelandra, published in 1943, and That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. The trilogy is often called the Space Trilogy or the Ransom Trilogy. Although the books share characters and ideas, they do not follow the conventions of a simple modern space-opera series. Lewis wrote them partly in conversation with his friend J.R.R. Tolkien and partly as an imaginative response to the science fiction of his time.
