Which 1883 volcanic eruption destroyed Krakatoa and produced a huge tsunami?
Answer
Krakatoa eruption
Answer
Krakatoa eruption
The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa destroyed much of the volcanic island and produced huge tsunamis.
Krakatoa, also spelled Krakatau, lies in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. A sequence of eruptions culminated on 27 August 1883, when major explosions collapsed much of the volcano’s island structure. The resulting sea displacement generated tsunamis that devastated nearby coastlines, killing more than 36,000 people, mostly through tsunami impacts.
The eruption was heard thousands of kilometres away and sent ash high into the atmosphere. Atmospheric dust and aerosols contributed to striking sunsets and cooler global temperatures for a period afterward. A new volcanic cone, Anak Krakatau, later emerged in the caldera. The 1883 event is often confused with the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora, another Indonesian eruption that caused major global climatic effects.
