Which 1678 book by Alexandre Exquemelin described the lives of Caribbean buccaneers?

The story behind the answer

Alexandre Exquemelin’s 1678 book was titled The Buccaneers of America.

Exquemelin was a French surgeon or barber-surgeon who spent time with buccaneers in the Caribbean. His book, first published in Dutch in 1678, described buccaneer society, voyages, attacks, and famous figures including Henry Morgan. English translations helped make the work widely known in Britain and elsewhere.

The book is an important firsthand or near-contemporary source for Caribbean maritime history, but historians treat parts of it cautiously. Editions and translations differ, and some dramatic details may have been expanded or altered during transmission.

The Buccaneers of America is not the same work as A General History of the Pyrates, published in 1724 and associated with the pseudonymous Captain Charles Johnson. The two books are often mentioned together because both shaped later popular ideas about pirates.
