Where was Jon Secada born?

The story behind the answer

Jon Secada was born in Cuba. He was born Juan Francisco Secada Ramírez in Havana on October 4, 1961, before becoming a Cuban-American singer and songwriter in the United States.

Secada’s family left Cuba when he was a child and settled in Miami, Florida, where he grew up. He later studied music at the University of Miami, earning degrees in jazz vocal performance and a doctorate in music. Miami’s Cuban-American community and Latin music traditions became important parts of his artistic identity.

He first gained major attention as a backing vocalist and songwriter for Gloria Estefan, including work on Miami Sound Machine recordings. His bilingual solo career took off in the early 1990s with songs such as “Just Another Day,” which became a major pop and adult-contemporary hit.

A common mix-up is confusing Secada’s birthplace with Miami, where he was raised and launched his career. Miami is central to his story, but the canonical birthplace is Havana, Cuba.
