What was Taylor Swift's first single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100?

The story behind the answer

Taylor Swift’s first single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 was “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Released in 2012 as the lead single from her album Red, it became her first chart-topping song in the United States.

The song debuted at number 72 before climbing to number one the following week, one of the largest single-week jumps in Billboard Hot 100 history. Its immediate success was also driven by digital sales: it opened at number one on the Hot Digital Songs chart with more than 600,000 downloads.

Swift wrote the song with Max Martin and Shellback, after an earlier writing session with producer and songwriter Dan Wilson. Its deliberately conversational title and upbeat production marked a strong move toward mainstream pop. A common mix-up is “I Knew You Were Trouble,” another major Red-era hit; that song reached number two, but it was not Swift’s first Hot 100 number one.
