Where was Joan of Arc executed in 1431?
Answer
Rouen
Answer
Rouen
Joan of Arc was executed in Rouen in 1431. The execution took place on 30 May in the Old Marketplace, now known in French as the Place du Vieux-Marché.
Rouen was then under English control and served as a major administrative center in Normandy. Joan’s ecclesiastical condemnation trial was held there, with Pierre Cauchon acting as the leading judge.
Joan was burned at the stake after being convicted of heresy. After she recanted a statement under pressure and later resumed wearing male clothing, the court treated her as a relapsed heretic. Modern historians often emphasize the political circumstances surrounding the trial and the English interest in discrediting her.
Rouen is distinct from Orléans, the city whose siege she helped lift, and Reims, the city associated with Charles VII’s coronation. A later retrial declared the original proceedings unjust.
