Where was golf's Vijay Singh born?

The story behind the answer

Vijay Singh was born in Fiji. He was born on 22 February 1963 in Lautoka, on the island of Viti Levu, then part of British Fiji and now the Republic of Fiji.

Singh grew up in nearby Nadi in an Indo-Fijian Hindu family. His father, Mohan Singh, worked as an airplane technician and taught golf, helping introduce Vijay to the sport. As a child, Singh also played cricket, football, rugby and snooker, reflecting the wide sporting culture of Fiji.

His route to elite professional golf was unusually international. After turning professional in 1982, he competed on the Asia Golf Circuit and later built his reputation through tours in Africa and Europe before reaching the PGA Tour in the United States.

Singh won three major championships: the PGA Championship in 1998 and 2004, plus the Masters Tournament in 2000. In 2004, he became world number one and won nine times on the PGA Tour, one of the outstanding seasons in modern golf.
