Where is the Torrey Pines Golf Club?

The story behind the answer

Torrey Pines Golf Club is in San Diego, California, on the city's coastal La Jolla mesa overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The facility is commonly called Torrey Pines Golf Course, although “Torrey Pines Golf Club” is a widely understood name in trivia and everyday usage.

The municipal complex is owned and operated by the City of San Diego. It has two championship layouts, the North Course and the South Course, and is named for the nearby Torrey pine, a rare tree native to the coastal region around San Diego and Santa Rosa Island.

Torrey Pines is especially associated with professional golf. The South Course has hosted the Farmers Insurance Open and major championship golf, including the 2008 U.S. Open, won by Tiger Woods in an eighteen-hole Monday playoff against Rocco Mediate. The location is sometimes described as La Jolla because the course sits in that community, but La Jolla is part of the City of San Diego, making “San Diego, CA” the correct canonical answer.
