Where is Leo Tolstoy buried?

The story behind the answer

Leo Tolstoy is buried at Yasnaya Polyana.

His grave lies in the “green stick” area of the forest on the estate near Tula, Russia. Tolstoy had remembered a childhood story about a green stick that supposedly contained the secret of how to end human suffering, and he asked to be buried in that quiet place.

The grave is notably simple and has no elaborate monument. This simplicity reflects Tolstoy’s criticism of wealth, status, and ceremonial display during his later life.

Tolstoy died in 1910 at Astapovo railway station after leaving home. His body was then taken to Yasnaya Polyana for burial. Astapovo is therefore the place of his death, not his final resting place.
