Where is J.R.R. Tolkien buried alongside his wife Edith?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien is buried alongside his wife Edith in Wolvercote Cemetery.

The cemetery is in Oxford, England, the city where Tolkien spent much of his academic and creative life. Tolkien and Edith are buried in the same grave, marked with the names ‘Beren’ and ‘Lúthien,’ two lovers from Tolkien’s mythology.

The names are deeply personal. Beren, a mortal man, and Lúthien, an immortal Elf, overcome extraordinary obstacles to be together. Tolkien and Edith’s relationship inspired elements of this story, and Tolkien used the names as a memorial to their shared life.

The grave is not in Oxford’s famous Christ Church or in a major London cemetery. Wolvercote Cemetery is a municipal cemetery north of Oxford’s city center and has become a place of literary interest because of Tolkien’s burial site.
