Where is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey primarily set?

The story behind the answer

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is primarily set in Ancient Greece.

The game takes place during the Peloponnesian War, a conflict between Athens and Sparta that began in 431 BC. Players explore a large version of the Greek world, including mainland regions and islands, while participating in events involving historical figures, cities, armies, and mythological elements.

Odyssey was developed by Ubisoft Quebec and released in 2018. Players choose between siblings Kassandra and Alexios as the protagonist, although Kassandra is the canon protagonist in the game’s later lore. The story follows a mercenary connected to the First Civilization and the historical origins of the Assassin’s Creed mythology.

The setting is earlier than those of most previous main entries. Assassin’s Creed Origins, released before Odyssey, takes place in Ptolemaic Egypt. Odyssey also differs from earlier games by emphasizing role-playing choices, dialogue options, multiple endings, and equipment customization.
