Where does Punxsutawney Phil make his prediction each year?
Answer
Gobbler's Knob
Answer
Gobbler's Knob
Punxsutawney Phil makes his annual prediction at Gobbler's Knob.
Gobbler's Knob is a wooded hill about two miles southeast of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Before dawn on February 2, crowds gather there for the town's Groundhog Day ceremony. Phil is brought from his burrow to the top of a ceremonial stump, where the Inner Circle interprets whether he has seen his shadow.
The tradition says that a visible shadow means six more weeks of winter, while no shadow signals an early spring. The celebration formally dates to 1887 and draws on older German Candlemas folklore involving an animal predicting the remaining length of winter.
A common mix-up comes from the 1993 film Groundhog Day, which is set in Punxsutawney but was filmed largely in Woodstock, Illinois. The movie also helped make Gobbler's Knob widely recognizable beyond Pennsylvania. Phil's predictions are ceremonial rather than scientific; weather analyses have found his accuracy to be well below the official claims.
