Where does Genesis say Noah’s Ark came to rest?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 places the Ark on the “mountains of Ararat” after the Flood waters began to recede. Ararat is associated with the ancient kingdom and region of Urartu, rather than necessarily identifying one particular summit.

A common modern assumption is that the text names Mount Ararat itself. The biblical wording is plural and refers to a mountainous region. Mount Ararat in present-day eastern Turkey became the best-known traditional candidate, but no archaeological discovery has been accepted as proof that the Ark survives there.

The Ararat reference also differs from later traditions that identify specific landing places. Genesis supplies the regional phrase, while subsequent Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and popular accounts have expanded or reinterpreted the geography.
