Where does Cinderella sleep in her own home?

The story behind the answer

Where does Cinderella sleep in her own home? Cinderella sleeps in the attic. In the 1950 Disney film, her stepmother and stepsisters have reduced her from a family member to a servant and assigned her a cramped room at the top of the house.

The attic setting visually reinforces her isolation. It is far removed from the comfortable rooms occupied by Lady Tremaine, Anastasia, and Drizella, and it becomes the place where Cinderella keeps her few belongings and dreams of a better life. Her animal friends Jaq and Gus also help her there.

The attic is especially important near the climax. After the royal slipper search begins, Lady Tremaine locks Cinderella in the attic to prevent her from trying on the glass slipper. The mice eventually retrieve the key, allowing Cinderella to escape and meet the Grand Duke.

This detail can be confused with a closet or cellar in other adaptations and folktale versions. Disney’s 1950 film specifically uses the attic as Cinderella’s bedroom and later as her prison.
