Where do they go on "Grey's Anatomy" for a drink?

The story behind the answer

On Grey’s Anatomy, the doctors go to Joe’s Emerald City Bar for a drink.

The bar is officially known as the Emerald City Bar, but characters and viewers commonly call it Joe’s Bar because Joe, played by Steven W. Bailey, owns and tends it. It is located across from Seattle Grace Hospital, later renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, making it a convenient escape after difficult shifts.

The bar serves as one of the show’s most important recurring social settings. Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, Derek Shepherd, George O’Malley, Alex Karev and other hospital staff meet there for drinks, dates, arguments and emotional decompression. Firefighters from Station 19 also become regular visitors in the connected television universe.

The fictional bar is not a real Seattle drinking spot. Early exterior and interior scenes were filmed at a real Pasadena location, while later scenes used a studio-built replica. The name “Joe’s Bar” is therefore a familiar nickname, while “Emerald City Bar” is the establishment’s proper name.
