Where are Stephen Hawking's ashes interred?
Answer
Westminster Abbey
Answer
Westminster Abbey
Stephen Hawking's ashes are interred at Westminster Abbey.
The ashes were placed in the abbey on 15 June 2018, a few months after his death in Cambridge. His memorial stone stands near the grave of Sir Isaac Newton, linking two of Britain’s most influential scientists. The inscription includes Hawking’s name, his dates, and a version of the Bekenstein–Hawking equation for black-hole entropy.
This was a symbolic location as well as a national honour. Westminster Abbey contains the remains or memorials of many major British figures, including Newton, Charles Darwin, and Ernest Rutherford. Hawking’s burial near Newton is especially fitting because Hawking made major contributions to cosmology, general relativity, and the physics of black holes.
A common mix-up is confusing the abbey with St Paul’s Cathedral, another famous London site associated with prominent figures. Hawking’s funeral took place at St Mary the Great in Cambridge; his ashes were later interred at Westminster Abbey.
