Where are Nikola Tesla's ashes displayed?

The story behind the answer

Nikola Tesla’s ashes are displayed at the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, Serbia.

Tesla died in New York on January 7, 1943, and his remains were cremated in the United States. In 1957, his ashes were transported to Belgrade by Charlotte Muzar, the secretary of Tesla’s nephew and heir, Sava Kosanović. They became part of the museum’s permanent memorial collection.

The ashes are held in a spherical urn designed by Serbian sculptor Nebojša Mitrić. The urn rests on a stone pedestal in a dedicated memorial area of the museum’s permanent exhibition. This is why the museum is both a science institution and an important site connected with Tesla’s personal legacy.

A common mix-up is the Tesla Memorial Center in Smiljan, Croatia, Tesla’s birthplace. That site commemorates his early life, but the displayed urn containing his ashes is in Belgrade. The Nikola Tesla Museum also preserves more than 160,000 documents from his archive.
