When did the British television show Dragon's Den first premiere?

The story behind the answer

The British television show Dragon's Den first premiered on 4 January 2005.

The programme launched on BBC Two as the British version of an international business-investment format. Entrepreneurs present their companies or ideas to a panel of wealthy investors, known as Dragons, and ask for money in exchange for equity.

The first series established the format that later seasons retained: a presentation in the Den, questioning about sales and valuation, and a decision to invest or decline. The programme became one of the BBC's best-known factual entertainment series and later moved between BBC Two and BBC One scheduling.

The premiere date is sometimes confused with the show's Japanese origin. Dragon's Den was not first created in Britain; its format originated in Japan, while the British adaptation began broadcasting in January 2005. This date also refers to the UK television series, not one of the many overseas adaptations.
