When did the Boeing 737 MAX make its first flight?

The story behind the answer

The Boeing 737 MAX made its first flight on January 29, 2016.

The first aircraft was a 737 MAX 8, identified by Boeing as aircraft line number 5602. It took off from Renton Municipal Airport in Washington state, beginning the flight-test campaign for the fourth generation of the 737 family.

The MAX introduced larger CFM International LEAP-1B engines and aerodynamic refinements, including split-tip winglets. Because the engines were larger than those on earlier 737 versions, Boeing positioned them higher and farther forward on the wing.

The first MAX delivery went to Malaysia-based airline Malindo Air in May 2017. The 737 MAX later became the subject of worldwide safety reviews after two fatal crashes, leading to a lengthy global grounding and mandated design and training changes.
