What year was the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) established?

The story behind the answer

What year was the League of Legends Championship Series established? The League of Legends Championship Series was established in 2013.

Riot Games launched the LCS as a structured professional competition for League of Legends during the game’s third competitive season. The first regular-season matches were played on February 7, 2013. The format introduced salaried teams, scheduled league play, regular broadcasts, and a season-ending championship modeled partly on traditional sports leagues.

The original competition was divided into regional leagues: the North American LCS and the European LCS. Each region initially featured eight teams. The system helped turn League of Legends esports from a collection of independent tournaments into a more formal league ecosystem with regular seasons and promotion-and-relegation structures.

Some dates cause confusion because Riot announced the new league structure in 2012, and the first LCS season began in 2013. The announcement year is not the establishment year used for the competition itself. The European league was later rebranded as the LEC, while the North American competition continued under the LCS name for many years before later regional restructuring.
