League of Legends was announced for Microsoft Windows in 2008.
Riot Games publicly announced the game on October 7, 2008, initially presenting it under the longer working title League of Legends: Clash of Fates. The announcement came before the game’s release and before most players had experienced its distinctive free-to-play, team-based format.
The timing matters because League’s public announcement and launch are often confused. Closed beta testing began in April 2009, while the full North American and European release followed on October 27, 2009. The game was therefore announced in 2008 but released the following year. Riot’s early design drew heavily on Defense of the Ancients, a popular Warcraft III custom map, while attempting to turn that community-made style into a standalone service with regular updates and a large champion roster. Microsoft Windows was the original platform; a macOS version was added later.
