Blue Sky Studios was founded in 1987, before it produced Ice Age.
The studio was established in New York by a group of computer-graphics artists and engineers, including Chris Wedge. Before making feature films, Blue Sky worked in computer animation, visual effects, and commercial production. Its technical background contributed to the studio’s ability to create computer-animated characters and environments.
Blue Sky’s first feature-length animated film was Ice Age, released in 2002. The movie became a major commercial success and established the studio’s most recognizable franchise. Blue Sky later produced films including Robots, Horton Hears a Who!, and Rio.
The studio was acquired by 21st Century Fox in 2012 and was closed in 2021 after Disney’s acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets. Its founding date is therefore earlier than both its feature-film era and its corporate ownership changes.
